One little square, 21 years later.

Who would have thought a game about a simple square would still be played today? What began as a starter project to learn about programming for the PSP became a passion project, further driven by the great PSP homebrew community. The exciting news is that the source code wasn’t lost, and Squarez will be available soon to play right here, along with its sibling ClusterStorm.

The story

Where the square came from

Squarez's Makefile referred to it as “skel”, short for “skeleton”: a starter program, an example only. Drawing to the screen and reading the analog stick and buttons was enough to learn how to program a game on the PSP, and a square was the quickest shape to show the stick could move something. The square was born.

From Squarez to ClusterStorm

Squarez came out in July 2005, with ten releases in five weeks, and PSPUpdates and DCEmu posted each one the day it appeared. It became ClusterStorm, for the PC in 2006 and the iPhone in 2010. Then it went quiet, and its players kept it alive until October 2026, when its 2005 source was compiled again.

Coming soon

The full website redesign is coming soon, and with it, every version of Squarez and ClusterStorm playable in your browser, online leaderboards, the whole story from 2005 to 2026, and the dev journal of the comeback.
